Preparing for Refinishing

Congratulations! You have selected one of the best refinishing companies to refinish your bathtub, sink, countertops or tile. We thank you for choosing us for your refinishing project, and ask that you take a few minutes to read the following information so that your refinishing experience will be the best that it can be. The time it takes to complete your refinishing project can vary, but on average it will take 2-6 hours, depending on the scope of the work that is scheduled to be done. Please be aware that it takes a minimum of 24 hours (up to 48 hours for tile) for the new surface to dry. Do not allow anything to touch the new surface during that time. For optimal curing of the product, please be sure that the room temperature remains at or above 70° during the entire curing period. Coatings will not cure if it’s too cold, and our technicians will not be able to perform the work well if it is too hot. You may remove the masking paper and tape after the initial 24 hour drying period. If any caulking had to be removed prior to the refinishing, you may reapply the caulking 24-48 hours after the refinishing was done.

Getting prepared

Do not paint the room less than a week before any refinishing work is scheduled. When we arrive at your home, we will have to mask off the walls and other fixtures surrounding the work area. If you have recently painted, depending on the type of paint and the thickness it is applied, there is a chance of it being pulled from the wall or peeling from the masking tape that is used for protection of walls and other fixtures. The same goes for painting after the refinishing is done. Please allow at least 4 days before painting in the room to allow the coating to cure sufficiently. Before the refinishing can be scheduled, you must make sure the job site is ready for refinishing. We need power and water on and drains fully functional in the bathroom on the day of refinishing. We need proper lighting fixtures so that we can see what we are doing. The better we can see, the better the job will look when done.
refinished claw foot bathtub
Water is used in the prepping process but we can get water from a sink, if the tub fixtures are not fully installed. In most cases we recommend that plumbing fixtures on the items that we are going to coat be replaced prior to refinishing. However there are times that it is better to wait to install new fixtures until after the refinishing coat is fully cured. No other work can be done in the room while we are doing the surface prep or refinishing. This includes plumbers, tile layers, fixture installers, and painters. Our work requires the use of some bulky equipment and a dust-free environment. In addition, we use chemicals that require our technicians to wear protective gear to ensure safety. If you have any work being done in the room where we will be resurfacing, let our office know so that we can reschedule your refinishing work for a better date. Please ensure that the room is clean and free of dust and hair, as this will minimize surface dust and will allow a clean environment to work in. Dust and pet hair can easily settle onto the surface while the coating is still wet, causing roughness or unsightly blemishes. Your new surface will turn out much better if it is allowed to dry without dust settling on it. The resurfacing material will not adhere to soap scum, mildew or calcium build-up. Please be sure that these are removed as well as possible before the technician arrives in order to avoid any additional cleaning charges. Mildew should be sprayed with bleach at least 24 hours before our arrival in order to prevent recurrence. Please remove all items from the bathroom: this includes all towels, rugs, bath mats, toilet brushes, plungers, shower curtains and rods, pictures, shampoo bottles, and any other personal items or knick-knacks. All countertop items should also be stowed in cabinets. Remember, all items left in the bathroom will need to be removed before our technician can start, so it will save both you and our technician a lot of time if the area is ready when they get there. Part of any good refinishing job is making certain that the item is properly cleaned before it is sprayed. Therefore, we must have running water and electricity in order to complete the job. If the property is unoccupied, please be sure that the utilities are on prior to our arrival. If there are pets in your home, please keep them out of the room while the techs are working and for at least 24 hours after the refinishing is done in order to allow the new surface to dry. For their own safety, this recommendation also applies to small children. Do not apply new silicone caulking to the surface prior to refinishing. Our refinishing material cannot adhere to silicone and it is sometimes necessary to remove the old caulking seam prior to refinishing. Once the coat is cured for 24-48 hours, then you can recaulk. When re-caulking, do not place tape on our surface as it could damage the new coat. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call our office. If we are unable to answer it, we will find the answer and respond as quickly as possible.

Bathtub Refinishing

Please make sure the faucet is drip-free. A small drip of water within the 24 hour curing timeline can be a very bad thing, sometimes even requiring a second trip for our technician to come and repair the damage. Unfortunately, this is not a warranty issue so it requires a service call fee. All hardware replacements or repairs on or around the tub must be done prior to refinishing. This is to avoid any possible damage to our refinishing coat. Any damage caused by either the homeowner, contractor, worker, person or pet after the refinishing job is completed is not covered under the warranty. When refinishing bathtubs, it is important to let our techs know if any waxes or silicone were used on the unit previously. This will allow us to de-gloss the surface before we start the normal cleaning process. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if a bathtub has been resurfaced before until the tech takes a look at it. If the tub has been resurfaced previously, there will be a reconditioning fee to prep it, or in some cases remove the other material and get down to the original surface. If the surface is not correctly prepared, there is a danger that the new surface will not adhere properly. Use of bathmats or slip resistant stickers on the refinished surface will void the warranty and can cause serious damage. Also, do not use bath pillows or other products that use suction cups to hold them in place.

Tile

Standard refinishing materials will not fill holes in tile, cracks in grout joints or deep recessed grout lines, nor will it reinforce loose or broken tiles. All of these types of damages must be repaired at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled refinishing job. Missing grout is to be repaired with regular grout, not caulking, silicone or siliconized grout. Colors do not have to match. Broken tiles must be replaced if the crack is separated or raised on one side creating a ridge. Loose tiles must be fully installed and grouted in place. Screw holes in tile can be filled by our technician and then resurfaced over. However, this is at an additional fee and will be priced according to the number of holes and their diameter. Do not fill holes prior to our arrival with any silicone-based caulking because our coat will not adhere to it. If silicone has been used in the past to repair grout joints, there will be an additional charge for removing it prior to refinishing. In some cases, if excessive caulking was used or the tile grout seams have been sealed with grout sealant, then we will either not be able to refinish the tile, or we will offer no warranty against peeling. If you know of these issues prior to the refinishing date, please call the office and notify us promptly. If tiles have been previously painted or refinished, they will require a reconditioning fee in addition to any other surfaces that we are already refinishing, i.e. the bathtub. The technician will attempt to target the peeling edges only, for a flat fee. However, in the event that the old coat continues to peel, they then will need to provide a new estimate for the additional reconditioning.

Countertops

We refinish bathroom vanities and kitchen countertops in a Multi-Speck or Stone Fleck finish. Besides being very attractive, this product is very durable and is environmentally friendly. To give your countertops the best protection, the surfaces are clear-coated after the color coat has completely dried. For these special finishes, please know that the weather and color of the product you choose have a lot to do with how soon we can come back to clear-coat the countertop. Please remember that we may have to wait 24-48 hours before they can be coated. The good thing about this is that we are able to sand the counter and we are able to maintain a consistent texture to the whole unit. When refinishing these items, we need to request the following: The angle stops (shut-off valves) and supply lines must be in good working condition. They must not leak, and the angle stops must turn freely without leaking. When checking these items, please inspect the angle stops or supply lines for any rust or white/gray/green deposits on the valves, which may indicate leakage problems. If so, a plumber or handyman is needed to have these items replaced before our work begins. It is recommended that faucets and sinks are removed from the countertops before refinishing. This will be helpful to allow us to create a seamless finish, and allow you to replace the faucet in the future. Sometimes you can use the old faucet, but our techs will not install old faucet fixtures because the plastic fixtures could have issues with seals and could possibly leak. If you want your old fixture reinstalled, please plan to do this yourself, or have a handyman or plumber reinstall the fixture for you. When refinishing kitchen or bathroom countertops, please have all surfaces cleared off before the tech arrives. Also remember to remove from the cabinets or drawers any items that you will be needing in the next 24-48 hours, as the surrounding areas will be taped off to prevent product overspray. If the masking paper is disturbed or the tape is removed prior to the product being fully dry, there will quite possibly be damage to the new surface, requiring a repair charge. When refinishing kitchen countertops, if possible, all kitchen appliances, including the refrigerator and stove should be moved to the center of the room so that the countertop edges can be sprayed easily, giving you the best finished product. Unfortunately, our technician will not be able to move the appliances for you. Drains and faucets can be reinstalled 24 hours after the unit has been sealed with the top clear-coat resin. Please use care and use a hand towel if you are setting items on the refinished product. We recommend using extra plumbers putty while tightening the fixtures down to avoid too much pressure on the new surface.

Sinks

Due to the small size of sinks, we normally require that the faucets and drains be removed prior to our arrival. Once the refinishing coat has cured, the faucets and drains can be reinstalled. If you cannot remove the fixtures, or if you have a concern with removing them, please call the office and verify with us if it is going to be an issue. Kitchen sinks are not warranted at all due to their extreme conditions of use. Rust repairs in sinks will not receive warranties. It is our strong recommendation that sinks which have rusted overflows should not be repaired, as it is impossible for us to remove all rust inside the overflow channel. Instead we recommend replacing. Any cracks in sinks must be photographed and provided to the office prior to refinishing to ensure that it can be repaired. Kitchen sinks may require additional masking depending on the layout of the home. If this is the case, then additional charges will be estimated onsite to be approved by the purchaser and by the technician.
