A chip in a tub is the most common damage. We start by removing any broken material that may still be in the chip. Then we fill the chip with an epoxy or a resin. Once it is filled, we sand the area so that it is flush with the surrounding surface. Then refinishing is performed to mask the repair.
Small surface scratches can really dull a surface. Fortunately these scratches are often so shallow, that standard refinishing would cover them. Deep scratches may need to be filled.
If a tub is cracked, we first determine if this was a result of a structural weakness or an accidental impact. Impact cracks are often easier to repair. To repair a crack in a bathtub, typically we will smooth out the crack with a filler and then resurface over the top.
Structural cracks often require reinforcing repairs, or in some cases cannot be repaired. After determining that we can fix a structural crack, we will choose what method of reinforcement is the best. Sometimes we use a fiberglass cloth sheet that is epoxied on top of the crack, which distributes the weight load over a broad area. Other times we need to use a foam injection under the bathtub to fill up an empty cavity, which creates a firm bottom for the bathtub. There have even been some cases where we added a new acrylic cut out to the bottom of the tub, creating an entire new bottom.
While porcelain bathtubs are some of the most durable tubs made, they have one major weakness, which is a tendency to rust. Some rust is only on the surface, resulting from water deposit staining. This type of rust is simple to cover, but if your faucet is continually dripping, it will recur and the faucet will need to be repaired or it can possible damage the resurfacing coat. In some cases the rust has been building up for a long time, or was caused by a chip in the tub. Once the protective porcelain is gone, the metal is exposed to water which can lead to rusting. While rust may appear to be just an eyesore, it is actually a major problem that should be dealt with as soon as possible.
